The Lucky Winner of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz C300

Katherine Sheldon

Katherine Sheldon of Fremont

Being a self employed accountant who has her own bookkeeping business in Fremont, Katherine Sheldon is a numbers person. Statistically speaking, she certainly didn’t expect to be this year’s winner. Last year was the first time she entered the Mercedes drawing and she purchased three entries. She decided to take advantage of the $200 special this year and purchased five entries, thus increasing the odds in her favor.

On December 4th, one of her five entries was the winning form. Immediately after the drawing, Smythe European Sales Manager, Rick Flores, and Jo Dewhirst tried to contact Katherine by phone. Rick only talked to Katherine very briefly when he tried to put the phone on "speaker" so all those in attendance could hear her responses, and twice the phone was disconnected when he attempted this maneuver. All Katherine heard was a lot of static and then the call was disconnected twice. At first she thought it might be a hoax. To satisfy her curiosity, Katherine quickly called Smythe European and confirmed the call was being placed from the dealership. She eagerly waited for Rick to call again. The third time was the charm, and the call was finally completed.

Katherine never imagined she would be driving a Mercedes. She was driving a 2005 Chrysler Sebring convertible. She has checked with her car insurance agent who confirmed that she was going to save money on her insurance because of the many safety features on the Mercedes.

Katherine doesn’t have a connection to lupus but found out about the drawing last year from her friend who is the LFNC’s current videographer.

When asked if she had any travel plans in her new car, she replied "I am cash poor right now--no trips are planned in the immediate future. I have rentals in Las Vegas that have hit me hard financially. They are renting for much less than before". She continued, "Perhaps I will drive the Mercedes there and check out the properties."

When asked what advice she has for people who have entered the drawing year after year and weren’t drawn as the winner, she concluded "Somebody has to win. I never expected to be this year’s winner. I am so wonderfully happy...you really made my year!"
