Session 1: Keynote by Dr. Rekha Mankad
Dr. Rekha Mankad is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the division of cardiovascular diseases and the Director of the Women’s Heart Clinic at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Her primary focus is on the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease in women. She initiated a cardio-rheumatology clinic almost 10 years ago to address the high risk of CVD within the autoimmune inflammatory population. Dr. Mankad is also the co-director for education in the echocardiography laboratory. She is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and a fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography.
Session 2: Regan Birr, REGAN MOVESRegan MOVES is gentle exercise designed specifically for people with chronic conditions, including those who have lupus and arthritis. I developed it out of necessity, given my diagnoses of systemic lupus, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia, because I couldn’t perform regular exercise (it was too strenuous, and wasn’t designed for people like me). I used my engineering degree to develop a low-torque, low-impact program that allowed me to exercise, while maintaining joint safety. It promotes sustainability, teeing participants up for success, with participants reporting increase in stamina, strength, and energy. Overall health is improved, with reported improvements in lab work including A1C values. My goal is that these benefits will lead to participants’ longevity.
